I have begun an Organizing Blog at RemarkableTransformations.blogspot.com I will be writing about all kinds of fun and useful tips for getting your life to work the way that you want it to! Feel free to call me with any personal questions you might have.
General
*Determine if you love, need, and/or use each item. If not, get rid of it, as our lives are what we make them; choose to fill your life with things that make you feel wonderful and add purpose and pleasure.
*Find a 'home' for everything. When your stuff has a place that it belongs, it will be easy to return it there as desired/required. Include your keys and glasses in this catagory as people often waste a lot of time looking for these items. Find a regular place in your house in which to hang or set your keys down when you come home. With your glasses, you can put a container or eyeglass holder next to your computer, on your bedside table, etc. and get into the habit of putting your glasses there as you travel from room to room.
*It takes 21 days to change a habit. That means that you may have to focus more intently for the first three weeks after you decide to create a new pattern of behavior in your life until it becomes more comfortable and familiar. It actually takes several months for that behavior to become automatic, but the first three weeks are crucial, so hang in there and you can change your whole way of interacting with your world for the better!
*It's okay to keep things of sentimental value --- the trick is to keep your memory items all together in a clean, safe, storage place that won't impede your daily routines, i.e. keep your memory box out of your bedroom closet, etc.
*Watch your thoughts. They are creating your reality. Don't believe me? What are you thinking about your life? Look around you; what do you see? You can acknowledge negative, defeating thoughts without subscribing to their reality. A basic place to begin to watch your thoughts is through some sort of meditation. To begin, you can try practicing for five minutes a day and increase in increments until you reach at least fifteen. Here's some simple meditation instructions: Sit quietly with your eyes closed and become aware of your breath. Follow your breathing cycle. Notice as the breath enters and exits your nose. In, out. In, out. In, out. Whenever thoughts arise, simply and gently return to your breath: In, out. In, out. In, out. Certain thoughts will be louder than others and clamour for your attention, but time and again, just allow yourself to return to observing your breath. That's it! If you truly desire to increase your sense of freedom and well-being, my suggestion is to commit to do this as a regular daily practice. The time and energy that you save as you engage in your life from a more balanced and grounded place will far outweigh the few minutes or more spent in quiet contemplation.
*Allow yourself to greive and/or celebrate as your release your excess clutter. I guarantee you that your life will change as you let go of your stuff.
Decorative
*Even pretty clutter is, well... clutter. To showcase your special, lovely items, allow space around them so that you can appreciate their beauty.
*Small baskets or containers can turn an otherwise cluttered area into an orderly one.
*Surround yourself with things that you truly love. Be selective. Remember, the images you look at every day will settle into your subconscious and begin to manifest in your life, so choose your paintings, etc. with that in mind.
*Your bedroom should be a haven. Pay particular attention to keeping this room peaceful and inviting as this is the place for restful, rejuvinating sleep, and intimacy. Close your eyes. Imagine exactly how you would want this sacred space to be, and then create it so that the room reflects your highest image.
*Mirrors open up a room and increase the perceived space. If you live in a small place, try adding some mirrors for a sense of expansion. If you walk into your home and face a wall instead of an open foyer, it's also a good idea to put a mirror up on that wall to open up the energy.
*Plants, flowers, candles, rugs, and pillows are all touches that can easily warm up and personalize your home.
Time
*If at all possible, allow yourself more time than you think you will need to get to wherever you are going. Things always take longer than we anticipate, and we can decrease our stress by creating a less frenzied lifestyle. Being on time shows respect for the person or people you are meeting; it is professional and courteous.
*Create your 'To Do' list for the following day on the evening prior. This will allow you to sleep more peacefully and prepare psychologically prepare you for your next day.
*Allow for unstructured time for yourself, and if you are a parent, for your children. Our psyches need time to be, play, create, and relax. So many people overschedule themselves and their families, that they block any inspiration that may decide to visit!
